NHS faces surge in business rates

NHS health authorities will see their business rates go up by about a third on average over the next few years, new research suggests.

According to an analysis by business advisory firm Gerald Eve, business rates for hospitals will go up from £328 million this year to £418 million in 2021.

Meanwhile, costs for GPs and health centres are expected to go up from £257 million to £332 million, the Telegraph reports.

The rate of increase looks set to be particularly high in some areas, with estimates suggesting Royal London Hospital, for instance, will see costs go up by almost 60 per cent during this period.

Jerry Schurder, spokesman for Gerald Eve, commented: "At a time when the NHS is under huge budgetary pressures, these rises in business rates liabilities highlight just how punitive the system has become and will be a cause of real concern for those tasked with delivering hospital and clinic services."
