NHS operations return to normal following cyber attack

The vast majority of NHS services have returned to normal after the recent cyber attack that caused widespread IT failures.

The recovery from the ransomware attack on May 12th has mostly been completed, with only a small handful of hospitals still diverting patients who require certain specific services that remain subject to disruption.

NHS England is continuing to work with GP surgeries to ensure that they are putting in place the necessary measures to protect themselves, with patients advised to expect to attend appointments as normal, unless they are specifically told otherwise.

However, members of the public were also reminded to bear the trouble caused by the attack in mind when dealing with staff, as well as to consider other primary care services – such as pharmacies and the NHS 111 phone line – instead of going straight to the emergency department.

Dr Anne Rainsberry, national incident director for the NHS, said: "The message to patients is clear: the NHS is open for business. Staff are working hard to ensure that the small number of organisations still affected return to normal shortly."
