NHS Providers calls for urgent injection of NHS cash

18th November 2016

NHS Providers is urging the government to announce a fresh injection of cash for the NHS in the forthcoming Autumn Statement.

The organisation, which represents NHS acute, ambulance, community and mental health services, has underlined the importance of delivering extra funding beyond hospitals in the areas of greatest need, with a particular focus on general practice and social care.

Currently, significant numbers of patients are having to attend accident and emergency departments when they could be dealt with more effectively outside of hospital, due to the pressures on GP and social care services.

As a consequence, only four out of 138 large emergency departments were meeting the required four-hour waiting time standard by the end of last year, with up to 6,800 beds in hospitals occupied by patients who are medically fit to leave hospital on any given day.

The cost of these discharge delays to NHS trusts is estimated to be around 820 million pounds per year, meaning increased funding for GPs and social care providers would deliver substantial savings.

NHS Providers' chief executive Chris Hopson said: "Investing in general practice and social care, as well as stopping the raids on capital spending to ensure our hospitals and other buildings are fit for purpose, must be an urgent priority."
