NHS reports significant rise in ice-related injuries

The NHS has reported a rise in the number of injuries occurring this week due to the icy weather conditions currently gripping the UK.

According to the organisation, hundreds of people have sustained breaks and fractures after slipping over in the snow and ice, while respiratory problems among patients have also risen, reported the BBC.

Furthermore, outbreaks of novoviruses have caused facilities to be strained even further.

The cold weather is not due to end in the immediate future, the news provider pointed out, with more snow forecast in various parts of the country.

A Met Office spokeswoman is quoted by the news provider as stating: “The cold weather will stay with us over the weekend as well, when there will be further snow showers in north-east and south-east England.”

Another strain on the NHS is alcohol dependency, according to professor Ian Gilmore, head of the Royal College of Physicians, who last week called for more to be done to discourage people from excessive drinking.
