NHS waiting time targets ‘being missed increasingly regularly’

The NHS is missing its waiting time targets on key metrics with increasing regularity, a new BBC report has shown.

Analysis from the broadcaster assessed performance on three key waiting time targets – four-hour A&E waits, 62-day cancer care, and planned operations and treatment – on a national and local basis.

It was shown that England, Wales and Northern Ireland have not hit any of these three key targets for 18 months, with only Scotland being able to meet its emergency care target at all in the last year.

Meanwhile, on a local level, only one service in the whole of the UK – run by Luton and Dunstable NHS Trust – has managed to reach all three targets every time over the past 12 months.

NHS professionals have blamed staff shortages, a lack of money and inadequate room in emergency departments as the reasons behind these trends.

Saffron Cordery, director of policy and strategy at NHS Providers, said: "It's time for an honest debate about what we can realistically expect the health service to deliver in such difficult circumstances."
