NICE gives green light to EUSA Pharma kidney cancer treatment

EUSA Pharma's new kidney cancer treatment has been backed for use in the UK by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Fotivda has been developed as a first-line treatment option for advanced renal cell carcinoma and is an oral, potent selective vascular endothelial growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (VEGFR-TKI).

The treatment, designed to be taken once a day, works by reducing the supply of blood to cancerous tumours, thereby starving them of oxygen and food.

Dr Lisa Pickering, consultant medical oncologist at St George's Hospital in London, described this as "excellent news" for patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma, as a key treatment goal is to enable them to live without their condition progressing for longer periods of time.

"We cannot cure their cancer but we can help to preserve normal living for as long as possible," she commented.

Nick Turkentine, chief executive of Kidney Cancer UK, added that this is a "great result" for people with the condition, as it is "vitally important" that patients have access to effective and well-tolerated treatments.
