Nipro Launches ELISIO-HX Expanded Hemodialysis in US

Japanese medical device manufacturer Nipro has commercially launched ELISIO-HX, a medium-cutoff dialyser featuring super high-flux membrane technology, in the US following FDA 510(k) clearance. Announced on 18 August 2026 through Nipro Medical Corporation, the launch expands US access to expanded hemodialysis therapy (HDx) to improve removal of larger middle molecules that conventional high-flux dialysis does not effectively clear, and builds on prior deployment across Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Middle molecules are substances associated with inflammation and other complications in dialysis patients that are not effectively cleared by conventional high-flux dialysis. Broader adoption of therapies designed to address this challenge has been constrained by supply limitations, high costs, operational complexity and infrastructure requirements. ELISIO-HX incorporates a highly controlled and precisely engineered pore structure designed to extend removal of larger middle molecules while maintaining albumin retention, an important factor in preserving patients’ nutritional status. James McGetrick, President of North America for Nipro Medical Corporation, positioned the launch as making the therapy accessible through existing dialysis delivery models at previously unattainable scale.

Dr Jeff Giullian, Chief Medical Officer for DaVita (the largest US dialysis provider), positioned the launch as expanding treatment options for nephrologists and enabling more individualised patient care. The endorsement is significant given DaVita’s scale in the US dialysis market. The launch positions Nipro to compete against established US dialyser incumbents Fresenius Medical Care (Optiflux, FX-class), Baxter (Xenium), Asahi Kasei Medical (Rexeed) and B. Braun (Diacap Pro), particularly in the growing expanded hemodialysis category where the medium-cutoff membrane approach has been slowly gaining ground globally over the past several years.

The commercial signal is a maturing US hemodialysis dialyser market entering a new phase where medium-cutoff membranes challenge conventional high-flux dominance. Nipro’s DaVita-endorsed US entry places significant new competitive pressure on Fresenius Medical Care’s dominant position. Expect Baxter, Asahi Kasei Medical and B. Braun to sharpen their own medium-cutoff and expanded hemodialysis positioning through the rest of 2026 and 2027.
