Novartis agrees takeover of Selexys Pharmaceuticals

21st November 2016

Novartis has announced the acquisition of Selexys Pharmaceuticals, a company specialising in the development of treatments for haematologic and inflammatory disorders.

The firm has exercised its right to acquire Selexys based on the positive findings of a new study of SelG1, an anti-P-selectin antibody that Selexys is developing for the treatment of vaso-occlusive pain crises in patients with sickle cell disease.

Results from the phase II SUSTAIN study have shown the promise SelG1 offers in treating this hereditary blood disorder, which is characterised by sickle-shaped red blood cells and can result in life-threatening blood flow disruptions.

Novartis obtained the exclusive right to acquire Selexys and SelG1 in 2012. The deal could be worth up to $665 million (539.3 million pounds) in upfront, acquisition and milestone payments.

Bruno Strigini, chief executive officer of Novartis Oncology, said: "With this acquisition, Novartis is able to leverage its leadership in hematology research to advance development of a potential new treatment option for patients living with this debilitating condition."

Currently, there are limited therapies available for the treatment of vaso-occlusive pain crises, a common complication of sickle cell disease, and Novartis hopes to remedy the problem through this acquisition.
