Novartis agrees takeover of Ziarco Group

16th December 2016

Novartis has announced the acquisition of Ziarco Group, a move that will help to expand its dermatology portfolio.

The privately-held company is focused on the development of novel treatments in dermatology, including a promising once-daily oral H4 receptor antagonist in development for atopic dermatitis, a condition commonly known as eczema.

This new product, ZPL389, is a potential first-in-class oral treatment for moderate to severe eczema. Currently, no safe, effective and well-tolerated oral treatments are available for the more serious forms of this condition.

ZPL389 has been shown to provide clinically and statistically significant reductions of eczema after eight weeks of treatment and has a favourable safety profile, making it a potentially important new asset for Novartis.

Vasant Narasimhan, global head of drug development and chief medical officer at Novartis, said: "We're excited about a potential new medicine for people with eczema through the acquisition of Ziarco and the addition of a first-in-class oral H4 receptor antagonist to our growing pipeline."

This will bolster Novartis' established expertise in the field of dermatology, following on from the recent successful launches of Cosentyx and Xolair.
