Novartis and Amgen expand Banner Alzheimer’s Institute collaboration
Novartis and Amgen have announced that they are expanding their ongoing Alzheimer's disease research collaboration with the Banner Alzheimer's Institute.
Under the terms of the expanded agreement, the organisations will launch a new trial called the Alzheimer's Prevention Initiative (API) Generation Study 2, which will assess whether the investigational drug CNP520 can prevent or delay the symptoms of Alzheimer's in a high-risk population.
CNP520 works by inhibiting the BACE1 enzyme that plays an important role in the production of amyloid beta, a protein that accumulates in the brains of Alzheimer's patients years before clinical symptoms begin.
Patient enrolment commenced in August 2017 in the US, with the plan being to eventually include more than 180 sites in more than 20 countries around the world in the five-year trial.
Dr Vas Narasimhan, global head of drug development and chief medical officer for Novartis, said: "Expanding our collaboration with Banner Alzheimer's Institute stands testament to our belief that preventing amyloid buildup is one of the most promising approaches to treating Alzheimer's disease."
The new study differs from the current ongoing Generation Study 1, which is limited to including those who carry two copies of the APOE4 gene considered a major risk factor for Alzheimer's.
