Novartis announces launch of Fanapt
Novartis has announced the availability of its latest product – Fanapt (iloperidone) tablets – which are indicated for use in adult patients suffering from schizophrenia.
The twice-daily oral antipsychotic was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in May last year.
Clinical trials showed that the treatment brought about noticeable improvement in symptoms of schizophrenia when compared to a placebo therapy.
Some of the most common adverse drug reactions associated with Fanapt are dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, nasal congestion, orthostatic hypotension and somnolence.
Ludwig Hantson, chief executive officer of Novartis, commented: “The launch of Fanapt is important because there is a need for alternative medications for many individuals who are suffering from this disease.”
Last week, Novartis revealed that it will buy the majority share of its fellow pharmaceutical firm Alcon.
The company will own a 77 per cent stake, while Alcon will retain the remaining 23 per cent minority share.
