Novartis’ Galvus ‘delivers blood sugar control’

Novartis has announced that its diabetes drug Galvus can help those with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar.

In addition to outlining the “significant blood sugar reductions” for a range of patients, the pharmaceutical company also said today that it is awaiting a decision from the European regulatory authorities by the end of 2007.

Commenting on research data, which has been collated as a result of a number of studies and showed good tolerability in humans, James Shannon, global head of development at Novartis Pharma AG, said: “These results further reinforce the clinical benefits of Galvus as an important new treatment option for patients with type 2 diabetes.”

He added that Novartis was “convinced that Galvus is safe and effective” and said the firm intends to work with authorities “to ensure this medicine can be made available to patients worldwide as soon as possible”.

The pharmaceutical company released its findings at the 67th Annual Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Earlier this week, Novartis drug Rasilez, a treatment for high blood pressure, received a “positive opinion” from the European commission’s committee for medical products for human use.
