Novartis launches new test to aid diagnosis of severe allergic asthma

Novartis has announced the launch of its new Niji System and Total IgE Test, for use in the detection and management of severe allergic asthma.

The novel in-office point-of-care diagnostic tool delivers quantitative total immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in about 12 minutes using only one to two droplets of blood taken from the finger, allowing for quick in-office diagnosis of allergic disorders.

Additionally, it does not require any sample preparation, time-consuming setup or calibration procedures, offering a performance comparable to currently-marketed reference laboratory tests in a medical office setting.

Novartis has received European CE Mark approval for the Niji System and Total IgE Test, meaning the new products have now been cleared for launch in Europe during the fourth quarter of the year.

Dr Vas Narasimhan, global head of drug development and chief medical officer for Novartis, said: "The Niji System provides a platform for fast and easy blood tests that could potentially be applied across a variety of disease areas."

Novartis is developing tests on the Niji System to address unmet needs for diagnosis and management of patients across a number of indications, with a pipeline of several tests currently in its portfolio.
