Novartis provides immunology scientists with funding through prize scheme

Novartis has announced the winners of its annual Novartis Prizes for Immunology scheme ahead of the International Congress of Immunology (ICI), where the prizes will be presented.

Awarded every three years for breakthrough contributions in the fields of basic and clinical immunology, each prize category provides up to three scientists with funding of 100,000 Swiss francs (79,400 pounds).

The winners of the Novartis Prize for Basic Immunology for 2016 were the US-based John Kappler, Philippa Marrack and Harald von Boehmer for their work in demonstrating how the immune system identifies the difference between native and non-native cells.

Meanwhile, the 2016 Novartis Prize for Clinical Immunology is to be awarded to Zelig Eshhar, Carl June and Steven Rosenberg for their work on the preclinical and clinical development of cellular immunotherapies for diseases such as cancer.

The accolades will be given to the recipients at the 16th ICI conference in Melbourne, which takes place on August 22nd.
