Novartis receives CHMP backing for new Cosentyx indications

28th October 2015

Novartis has been recommended for European approval of its drug Cosentyx in two new indications.

The European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has recommended the approval of Cosentyx in Europe to treat ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis patients following two separate regulatory submissions.

Cosentyx is now recommended for the treatment of active ankylosing spondylitis in adults who have responded inadequately to conventional therapy, and for the treatment of active psoriatic arthritis in adult patients alone or in combination with methotrexate when the response to previous disease modifying antirheumatic drug therapy has been inadequate.

There is an urgent need for new medicines for these conditions, as significant numbers of ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis patients are dissatisfied with current treatment.

David Epstein, division head of Novartis Pharmaceuticals, said: "Novartis is pleased to be so close to bringing this life-changing medicine to people living with ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis who are struggling to find the right treatment to control their symptoms."

This comes after the firm presented drug data earlier this month showing the majority of psoriasis patients are able to maintain clear or almost clear skin by using Cosentyx.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801804302-ADNFCR
