Novartis renin inhibitor to get FDA review
Novartis has announced that the US Food and Drug Administration has accepted its oral renin inhibitor Rasilez for regulatory review.
The company has said that the product is the first new treatment approach in a decade for people with high blood pressure.
The Novartis application includes data from 34 trials and more than 6,000 patients with high blood pressure.
Novartis said that the results showed “significant blood pressure reductions” when the renin inhibitor was used as a monotherapy for a 24 hour period.
“The sustained 24-hour blood pressure control achieved with once-daily Rasilez is good news for people with high blood pressure,” said Dr James Shannon, head of development at Novartis.
“This innovative medicine has the potential to redefine future treatment standards, and studies are now underway to evaluate potential long-term benefits beyond blood pressure control.”
According to American Heart Association data, high blood pressure affects one in four adults or approximately one billion people worldwide.
