Novartis reports new clinical data showing benefits of MS drug

Novartis has announced new clinical trial data demonstrating the benefits of BAF312, its new treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS).

Results from the phase III EXPAND study have shown the efficacy and safety of the oral once-daily siponimod therapy in the treatment of secondary progressive MS, with the drug meeting its primary endpoint of reducing the risk of disability progression compared with placebo.

A total of 1,651 people from 31 countries were enrolled in the EXPAND trial, making it the largest randomised controlled study conducted among patients with this disease to date.

Topline results from EXPAND will be presented at the Congress of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis in London next month and will support future regulatory applications for the drug.

Vasant Narasimhan, global head of drug development and chief medical officer for Novartis, said: "SPMS is a particularly disabling form of MS, and there is a need for effective treatment options to help delay disability progression in those living with the condition."

Secondary progressive MS is associated with worsening symptoms and an accumulation of disability, independent of relapses. Currently, there are very limited treatment options available for this condition.
