Novartis Workforce Cuts Cull Leadership Roles

In order to save $1 billion, Novartis has announced that it was officially cutting its workforce from 108,000 to 100,000. However, this move was not out completely out of the blue with three senior leadership members struck off earlier this year.

Novartis will be eliminating 1,400 employees in Switzerland, where they are based. With almost 50% of these cuts threatening executive roles, impacted managers will be notified at the close of August.

Prior to revealing their cost skimming decision, the firm had already begun integrating its oncology and pharmaceuticals units. Susanne Schaffert, the company’s oncology director, was let go as a result of this as Novartis aimed to eliminate the existence of two identical organisational structures.

Because of the way the corporation draughts its contracts, the reductions won’t cause an impact before next summer, however, less workers will have the choice of retiring early.

Matthias Leuenberger commented that they “have shared the anticipated impact on positions at our Swiss headquarters organization” and “will not be providing a breakdown of the potential impact in other countries.”

“The consultation process with the employee representatives for non-management staff in Switzerland is still ongoing.”

The aim is to streamline the company as it “intends to eliminate roles across the organization.”
