Novo Nordisk and NHS trusts ally on diabetes initiative

Novo Nordisk has entered into a new collaboration with UK public sector organisations that aims to provide a new model of specialist diabetes care.

The i3-diabetes scheme was launched at the end of last month in partnership with King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre, which comprises King's College London and Guy's and St Thomas', King's College Hospital and South London and Maudsley NHS foundation trusts.

Work will be done to develop a new model of diabetes care that is more integrated with community and primary care, with a specific focus on the shift to more community-based services. delivering better outcomes for patients.

Running for five years, the project will aim to improve care coordination and develop a holistic risk stratification system to ensure care is suited to patients' whole needs. This will draw on the expertise on all of the partners involved.

Peter Meeus, vice-president of Novo Nordisk in the UK and Ireland, said: "The i3-diabetes programme will offer an opportunity for all to learn how to drive improvements in outcomes without the usual concurrent increases in cost."

Last month, the company announced its financial results for the 2013 business year, during which it achieved a 12 percent year-on-year increase in sales.
