Novo Nordisk begins research into long-acting oral GLP-1 analogue

Novo Nordisk has started its UK-based investigations into the effectiveness of NN9924 – a long-acting oral GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) analogue for which it has made a payment to Emisphere Technologies.

The firm paid a total of $2 million (1.23 million pounds) to the company, as its Eligen Technology was utilised for the establishment of the compound.

GLP-1, which is a natural hormone involved in controlling blood sugar levels, is being investigated for its safety, tolerability and bioavailability in individuals suffering from type 2 diabetes.

It stimulates the release of insulin when blood sugar levels become too high, as GLP-1 secretion is often impaired in those with the condition, the company highlighted.

Peter Kurtzhals, senior vice-president and head of diabetes research at Novo Nordisk, remarked: “We still have a long road with many challenges ahead of us before a GLP-1 pill becomes a reality.”

Last week, Novo Nordisk announced its plans to work alongside Combine to conduct research into autoimmune disease therapies.
