Novo Nordisk to establish new diabetes research site

Novo Nordisk has announced plans to establish a new centre to conduct type 1 diabetes research in the US.

The facility will be located on the same premises as the Novo Nordisk Inflammation Research Centre in Seattle and is set to open this summer, with around 20 scientists supported by corporate functions in the US and Denmark.

It will embrace a new translational research and development concept that combines basic research and early proof-of-concept studies under one umbrella, allowing projects to progress rapidly from early-stage trials to small exploratory assessments.

Novo Nordisk is seeking to address the lack of progress made in the study of type 1 diabetes in recent years, with the type 2 strain having received more focus in the last decade.

Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, executive vice-president and chief science officer at Novo Nordisk, said: "Novo Nordisk has been passionate about helping people fight diabetes since the company was founded and it is our mission to take type 1 diabetes research to the next level."

This comes after the company was named the most sustainable business in the world earlier this week in a new report from Corporate Knights.
