Novo Nordisk to expanf business portfolio

Novo Nordisk has announced that it will be enhancing its business portfolio to encompass several new treatments.

The company states that it will now initiate research into several sectors such as cancer and arthritis. This compares to previous areas of interest where it spent most of its time and money “narrowing focus” on a few diseases, such as haemophilia, diabetes and hormone treatment.

Chief executive Lars Regien S?rensen comments that the new sectors will start of as small scale in comparison with other areas of research that include diabetes and haemophilia.

He said: “We have financial strength and science competences that we are trying to utilise in new areas. However, it will be at a level which will not influence our focus on our core business.”

Norvo Nordisk states it has the broadest range of diabetes products in the healthcare industry, which include advanced products for the treatment of diabetes. It also deals with homeostasis management and growth hormone and hormone replacement therapy.

The company was recently in headlines for suing Pfizer for patent infringement over the inhaled insulin product Exebra. Novo Nordisk was one of several companies aiming to stop the launch of Exubera in the US in September, though the drug remains several years away from approval.

Reports from TheStreet.com suggest that Novo Nordisk filed a suit against Pfizer alleging that the company “wilfully infringed” on the patens and would seek a preliminary injuction against what it claims is Pfizer’s “continuing unlawful conduct”.
