Novo Nordisk welcomes UN diabetes resolution

22nd December 2006

Novo Nordisk has this week welcomed the adoption of a resolution on diabetes by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). The resolution states that access to care for diabetes should not be neglected and is a human right.

The company has stated that it will establish groups of “high-level” experts including politicians, patient groups, international groups and healthcare professionals to push for better outcomes for sufferers of the disease.

Novo Nordisk will also attempt to raise awareness with the world tour of its Changing Diabetes Bus, partnerships with authorities for the establishment of specialised programmes and connecting with young people to involve them in the development of an enhanced future for diabetes patients.

Lars Rebien Sorensen, president and chief executive officer of Novo Nordisk, said: “The support for this resolution demonstrates that all nations have recognised the severity of the worldwide diabetes pandemic and have committed to urgently dealing with this.”

He added that the company’s “mission” was to guarantee that action is taken to combat diabetes and influence member states to establish national policies regarding the disease.

Earlier this month, Novo Nordisk announced that it had joined with the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to enhance European research into diabetes.
