Obama’s stepmother backs NHS

17th August 2009

As NHS critics and supporters continue to offer their opinions on the service as the US mulls a similar system in the place of health insurance plans, another figure has spoken out in praise of the government-run system.

Following Professor Stephen Hawking and Gordon Brown’s declarations of support for the NHS last week, Barack Obama’s stepmother has also praised the service and said that it saved her life in the past.

Kezia Obama, who is British, said that seven years ago she suffered from chronic kidney failure while visiting her home country, reports This is London.

“The NHS saved my life. I would have missed the greatest and proudest moment in my family’s history if it was not for this country’s healthcare system,” Ms Obama told the publication.

Since then, she has moved back to the UK and has also undergone two hip replacement operations at Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot.

This news comes after leader of the Conservatives David Cameron insisted last Friday that his party is fully behind the NHS, despite MEP Daniel Hannan criticising the system on TV last week.
