Obesity-related genes ‘do not stop people from losing weight’

22nd September 2016

A new study has indicated that genetic markers that increase a person's chances of gaining weight should not prevent them from losing it.

The Newcastle University research reviewed the findings of eight studies involving more than 9,000 people to assess the impact of the FTO gene on weight loss. FTO carriers are known to be three kilos heavier on average, as well as being 70 percent more likely to be obese.

It was shown that people with the risk version of FTO responded just as well to weight loss interventions as everyone else, a trend that held true for men and women, younger and older individuals, and people of different ethnicities.

Study leader John Mathers, professor of human nutrition at Newcastle University, said: "You can no longer blame your genes. Our study shows that improving your diet and being more physically active will help you lose weight, regardless of your genetic makeup."

However, it was noted that these studies mostly involved white patients, creating a need for further research specifically focusing on those from other ethnic backgrounds, as well as studies analysing the impact of other obesity-related genes.
