Olympus agrees takeover of Spiration
Olympus has confirmed a deal to purchase medical device company Spiration in a move that will strengthen the company’s products and services portfolio.
The agreement will see Spiration, a firm which specialises in minimally invasive devices for acute and chronic lung conditions, become a consolidated subsidiary of Olympus.
It represents the continuation of a longstanding relationship between the firms, with Olympus having acted as the exclusive distributor of the US-based company’s IBV Valve System for emphysema treatment in Europe and Japan since 2008.
Haruhito Morishima, president of Olympus Medical, said Spiration’s “technological capability and deep insights into the respiratory field” make the acquisition a good fit.
He added: “I am pleased that our partnership with Spiration has led to this agreement which makes Spiration a part of the Olympus Group.”
Earlier this year, Olympus entered into collaboration with fellow medical device company Siemens in order to develop the technology for a new magnetically guided capsule endoscope system.
