One in four students ‘experiencing mental health problems’
A new survey has demonstrated that more than one-quarter of British students are currently experiencing some kind of mental health problems.
The YouGov survey has indicated that 27 percent of UK students report having a mental health problem of one type or another, with 34 percent of female students reporting such issues, compared to only 19 percent of males.
LGBT students were shown to have a particularly high likelihood of mental health problems compared to their heterosexual counterparts (45 percent versus 22 percent), showing there is a social component to these issues.
The study also shed light on the impact of such problems, with 47 percent of those polled saying they have trouble completing some daily tasks, while a further four percent say they cannot complete even simple tasks.
When asked about the nature of their issues, 77 percent said they had depression-related problems and 74 percent had anxiety-related problems, with these two conditions frequently affecting the same students at the same time.
