One Step closer to detecting bTB with the Actiphage test
PBD Biotech and the University of Nottingham have developed Actiphage, a test that can detect possible bTB.
The use of the Actiphage test has been accepted for exceptional private use, but is surrounded by heavy APHA protocol. Certain criteria, and the farmers written consent must be gained before the test can carried out.
The test can detect live mycobacteria in blood or milk within six hours. The level of speed and accuracy with the test allows for quick responses and actions to be taken. This will avoid further contamination to the rest of the heard, compared to the existing skin testing which takes three days for a result currently
PBD Biotech’s chief executive Berwyn Clarke said the APHA protocol is a “significant step forward”
“The APHA’s protocol offers a promising new approach to controlling the infection. Actiphage is now included within a series of measures farmers can use in conjunction with their vet, and with specific APHA approval, as a means to improving their disease management strategy. For many farms that have been struggling for years, it provides the first step to becoming TB free.”
