Orthofix acquires spinal implant company
Orthofix, the orthopaedic company, has acquired Blackstone Medical, a company that specialises in the design and development of spinal implant products.
The transaction has cost Orthofix $333 million and will result in the combination of Orthofix’s spine stimulation franchise with Blackstone’s array of fusion, non-fusion and biologic products.
Orthofix said that the addition of Blackstone and the potential released by the restructuring will make the company into one of the largest spinal product firms in the world, with the combined spine business growing at a rate 25 per cent per year.
Alan Milinazzo, the chief executive officer of Orthofix, remarked: “This acquisition is a transformational event for Orthofix and a major step in our strategy, as it establishes a solid platform for accelerated sales and earnings expansion in the fastest-growing segment of the orthopaedics industry.”
James F Gero, chairman of the Orthofix board of directors, added: “This transaction represents one of the most significant milestones in Orthofix’s history…”
The Orthofix group has a large number of sites in the UK, including its Intavent Orthofix business in Maidenhead, Berkshire. It also operates Orthosonics in Ashburton, South Devon, and Orthofix Vascular in Andover, Hants.
