Patients should ‘do their homework’ before seeking treatment abroad

Many countries offer an excellent standard of cosmetic surgery, but patients are advised to do plenty of background research before choosing a clinic in order to be in a position to make informed choices.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, it is even more important to research overseas clinics than it is for surgery at home and it is worth letting a UK cosmetic surgeon know your plans so that they are fully aware of your situation if complications arise once back at home.

It is important to develop a good relationship with your surgeon, which can be difficult when the facility you intend to use is overseas. However, ensure you make as much contact with the surgeon as possible prior to the procedure, both to build confidence and to make sure they know exactly what you want.

Also, always check a surgeon’s qualifications as well as the reputation of the clinic itself. Make sure that they have specific cosmetic surgery training from an accredited programme, as well as a good knowledge of English.
