Pfizer announces Asco oncology presentations

Pfizer has announced that it is to present oncology data across a number of cancer types at the upcoming annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (Asco) in Chicago.

These forms include colorectal, liver, melanoma, non-small cell lung, renal cell carcinoma and thyroid cancers, with the firm to present up-to-date information from the three areas of its oncology discovery portfolio – anti-angiogenesis, immuno-oncology and signal transduction.

Study data in the anti-angiogenesis area includes results relating to Sutent (sunitinib malate) and axitinib, while CP-675,206 will be explored in the immuno-oncology presentations and CP-751,871 for the presentations in the signal transduction area.

Joe Feczko, chief medical officer at Pfizer, said: “Each person with cancer responds differently to treatment, so it’s critical that physicians have the flexibility of trying new options and tailoring regimens to patients’ individual needs.”

He added that the company would continue to focus on both the investigation of novel compounds and the expansion of use of existing pharmaceutical products in developing treatments for a range of cancers.

In November 2006, Pfizer announced that the addition of epirubicin to a chemotherapy regimen of cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and fluorouracil can improve the overall survival in women in the early stages of breast cancer.
