Pfizer announces positive trial results for Prevenar 13

Pfizer has announced positive results for a phase III trial of Pneumoccal polysaccharide conjugate vaccine [13-valent, absorbed] Prevenar 13.

The pharmaceuticals giant released data to confirm the compound's immunogenicity, tolerability and safety in adults from 18 to 49 years of age as part of its recent study.

It said the data supported a recent regulatory submission to expand the indication of Prevenar 13 to the European Union and will be used to sustain similar plans in other countries around the world.

Scientists set out to demonstrate that the immune response to the vaccination is not inferior to that experienced by individuals in the 60 to 64-year-old age group, as measured by serotype specific opsonophagocytic assay titers one month after administration.

William Gruber, senior vice-president of vaccine clinical research and development at Pfizer, said: "Prevenar 13 is the first and only pneumococcal conjugate vaccine for adults and we continue to study the vaccine in new populations with the aim of broadening its availability."
