Pfizer announces “significant growth” in pipeline

Pfizer, the healthcare and pharmaceuticals development specialist, has reported an increase in the number of treatments currently undergoing trial processes.

According to statistics from the organisation, the number of programs in phase III development has increased by over 60 per cent in the last six months from 16 to 25.

In total, Pfizer now has 114 products and programmes undergoing clinical development stages from phase I through to registration.

President of Pfizer Global Research and Development Martin Mackay commented that the company is making “significant operational improvements”.

Mr Mackay added: “We are investing in the most promising disease areas, where there is strong unmet medical need, favourable markets and an opportunity to advance medical science.”

The company recently streamlined its approach to focus on high-potential disease areas, with 19 of its 31 advances to higher stage development falling within this category, which includes diabetes, Alzheimer?s disease and schizophrenia.

These new statistics place Pfizer ahead of its December 2009 target pledge to investors, which promised a minimum 24 of new developments would undergo the Phase III testing process.

Pfizer produces medical treatments across 11 therapeutic disciplines and also develops animal vaccines and medication.
