Pfizer: Chantix being appraised by NICE

Pfizer has announced that its anti-smoking therapy, Chantix (varenicline) is being appraised by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). Varenicline has been accepted by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) for use by NHSScotland.

The institute is conducting a single technology appraisal for Chantix, an orally-administered pill that operates through stimulating nicotine receptors that exist in the brain, though the drug itself is not addictive.

According to SMC guidelines, the drug should be used in combination with a support programme, noting that the effectiveness of the drug after 12 weeks of treatment is not guaranteed.

David Sellier, a spokesperson for Pfizer, commented that following the appraisal, the institute will come to a decision regarding use of the compound on the NHS in England and Wales later this year.

“[Chantix] is available on the NHS, they just haven’t issued their guidance on it,” he said.

“Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) has published its own guidance,” he added.

Pfizer noted that when Chantix is prescribed, the prescription includes a behavioural support programme for patients.

In August 2006, Pfizer announced the launch of Chantix in US pharmacies following approval from the Food and Drug Administration, with the drug being offered in conjunction with the GetQuit Support Plan.
