Pfizer presents new data on HIV/Aids compounds

Pfizer has presented new data from its HIV/Aids portfolio at the 15th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.

The pharmaceutical company reported new study results for two investigational, second-generation HIV compounds as well as presenting additional data on its Selzentry (maraviroc) tablets.

Data presentations on its investigational HIV compounds included new results from phase I trials on a CCR5 antagonist that suggest it is well-tolerated with a dosing profile that shows potential for once-daily administration.

In addition, Pfizer outlined phase I data on a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor which demonstrated in vitro activity against a variety of HIV-1 subtypes.

New data was also presented from the ongoing Selzentry clinical programme which showed sustained efficacy and tolerability for the tablets.

Trials demonstrated that nearly three times as many patients receiving Selzentry in combination with an optimised background regimen achieved undetectable levels of virus compared to patients receiving just the regimen alone.

Discussing the new data, Dr Martin Mackay, president of Pfizer Global Research and Development, confirmed: “Pfizer is continuing to invest in research that we hope will help physicians remain one step ahead in their fight against HIV.”

Last month, Pfizer published its fourth-quarter and full year results for the 2007 fiscal year, with the company recording revenues of $48.6 billion (24.5 billion pounds), up from $48.4 billion in 2006.
