Pfizer terminates 2 phase III trials

25th February 2009

Pfizer has terminated its phase III clinical trials of two treatments.

The decision to cease the development programmes of the compounds esreboxetine – aimed at treating fibromyalgia ? and PD 332,334 – for generalised anxiety disorder – follows a review by the company’s primary care business unit.

The action will allow the firm to allocate additional resources to higher programmes in an attempt to deliver better value to shareholders and patients.

Pedro Lichtinger, president and general management of the section, commented: “While confident in the safety of these compounds, we don’t believe that they provide significant benefit over other therapies.”

All clinical investigators involved in studies of both of the compounds will be notified to decide which course of action would be best for those taking part in the study.

People taking part in the trials should contact their examining site if they have any questions or concerns.

Founded in 1849, Pfizer employs over 80,000 people in more than 150 countries worldwide to develop and manufacture prescription medicines to patients.
