Philips announces collaboration with Volcano

2nd April 2007

Philips Medial Systems has announced it is collaborating with the Volcano Corporation to enable compatibility between the Philips Allura Xper FD systems and the Volcano s5i suite of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) systems.

Volcano manufactures and distributes IVUS systems and by making the two compatible, clinicians will be able to work quickly and easily during catheterisation lab procedures, according to Philips.

“IVUS is an integral part of daily percutaneous coronary interventions,” said Bert van Meurs, senior vice president of cardiovascular x-ray for Philips Medical Systems.

“Volcano’s new s5i IVUS system ? integrates into any new cath lab quickly and seamlessly, and provides our customers with integrated IVUS functionality.”

Mr Van Meurs said that the agreement should help Philips Medical Systems meet the needs of its customers, while at the same time allowing the company to “retain its technology and market leadership position”.

Testing has been carried out recently by Philips to prove the compatibility of the two systems and associated products, with positive results.

Volcano Corporation, as well as offering IVUS imaging systems, has a range of functional measurement devices, which analyses pressure and flow from inside blood vessels.
