Pioneering spot on treatment for cats released by Vetoquinol

7th December 2021

Felpreva will be the first spot-on medicine for cats that will protect against all main endoparasites and ectoparasites, such as tapeworms, fleas, and ticks.

Felpreva belongs to the endectocide group, they are chemicals that are used to control parasites. This includes both endo (internal) and exo (external) parasites.

Parasiticides are thought to be the biggest portion of the companion animal veterinary pharmaceutical market globally but administering parasiticides to cats can be hard, with over 40% of people who own a cat saying they felt guilty, anxious, or concerned.

The discomfort they feel may explain why owners do not use flea treatments as often as is advised by the European Scientific Council Companion Animal Parasites recommends (ESCCAP). For outdoor feline pets, the recommendation is to worm them a minimum of 4 times annually. However, there are certain breeds or cases where there is a higher risk and therefore, they will need to be treated more regularly.

Helen Hunter at Vetoquinol, explained that “the need for a breakthrough endectocide solution like Felpreva has never been greater. This marketing authorisation is a vital achievement for Vetoquinol UK, and will allow us to bring convenience, longer-lasting protection, and ease of use to veterinary professionals and owners alike, in turn safeguarding the well-being of our feline companions.”
