Planned junior doctors’ strikes suspended over safety fears

The British Medical Association has announced that industrial action planned by junior doctors in October, November and December is to be suspended.

Strike action had been scheduled for these three months, as well as September, in protest over the ongoing dispute regarding the government's new contractual terms for junior doctors, but the September dates were cancelled over safety concerns.

Further feedback from doctors, patients and the public, plus discussions with NHS England, have now led to the remaining strike dates also being cancelled, due to scepticism over the ability of the NHS to maintain a safe service if the industrial action went ahead.

Nevertheless, the BMA has reiterated its opposition to the imposition of the contract and is now planning a range of other actions to protest the move.

It called on the government to take this opportunity to engage with junior doctors and make a fresh effort to come to an agreement over the stalled contract talks.

Dr Ellen McCourt, newly-elected chair of the BMA's junior doctor committee, said: "This whole dispute has turned on how the NHS will assure quality care over seven days. It has highlighted the need for an open and honest debate, led by the BMA, on how this will be achieved."
