Plastic X-ray detector ‘delivers medical-grade imaging performance’

Scientists in the Netherlands have been able to develop a proof-of-concept X-ray detector produced on a plastic substrate.

This represents the first ever X-ray device produced using this material that is capable of medical-grade performance, delivering high-resolution, dynamic images at 25 frames per second and 200 pixels per inch, with high contrast using medical-level X-ray doses.

Researchers at the Holst Centre in Eindhoven first proved that X-ray detectors on plastic were viable two years ago, but have now refined the technology with a reduced photodiode leakage current and higher signal-to-noise ratio.

These new devices could offer various benefits over digital X-ray sensors produced on glass substrates, which are heavy, difficult to transport and prone to breakages.

Research head Gerwin Gelinck from the Holst Centre said: "Our next goal is to scale up the technology and produce a full-size 30 cm by 30 cm demonstrator module for medical applications."
