Platinum microcoil developed to facilitate treatment of complex aneurysms

An American medical product company has developed a platinum endovascular microcoil to facilitate the treatment of complex cerebral aneurysms.

California-based Micrus Endovasular Corporation’s Cashmere microcoil system is designed to provide stable framing or filling of ruptured or irregularly shaped aneurysms, which can necessitate the use of a softer microcoil.

Unlike other products on the market, the company’s coils work by automatically deploying within the aneurysm and forming a scaffold, which is compatible with a number of irregular aneurysms forms.

The Cashmere microcoil also offers the advantages of being comfortable and stretch-resistant.

John Kilcoyne, president and chief executive officer, said: “The addition of the Cashmere system strengthens Micrus’ position as a leader in the endovascular coil market. We now offer interventionalists superior clinical options in coil selection, even when treating delicate aneurysm walls in the most challenging cases.”

“Cashmere, one of the softest coils on the market today, seeks an aneurysm’s shape through its innovative infinity loop design,” he added.

Aneurysms are dilated blood vessels that are most often found in arteries in the brain and can be brought on by impairment of the vessel wall or disease.

Prior to the development of coils, treatment of aneurysms required invasive surgery.
