Q.ANT’s NPU 2: Revolutionizing AI with Photonic Processing

19th November 2025

Q.ANT has unveiled its cutting-edge second-generation photonic processor, the Native Processing Unit (NPU) 2, at Supercomputing 2025. This innovative platform promises massive strides in energy efficiency and performance for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) tasks. By leveraging light to perform complex operations, the NPU 2 creates new opportunities across various applications, poised to transform industries such as robotics, computer vision, and industrial intelligence.

In recent developments at Supercomputing 2025, Q.ANT presented its NPU 2, designed to overcome the energy limitations plaguing conventional silicon-based processors. With photonic technology enabling nonlinear mathematical operations in a single optical step, this processor drastically reduces heat production and energy consumption. Integrated within a 19-inch rack-mounted server, equipped with an x86 host processor and Linux OS, the NPU 2 seamlessly connects to existing CPUs and GPUs through PCIe interfaces. As silicon-based systems struggle with energy demands, particularly in data centers where GPUs can consume vast amounts of power, Q.ANT’s photonic approach offers a remarkable alternative with up to 30 times less energy use and 50 times greater performance in AI and HPC challenges.

Q.ANT’s NPU 2 not only signifies a technological leap forward but also ushers in a new era for AI and HPC with its unparalleled efficiency and processing capabilities. As CEO Dr. Michael Förtsch asserts, the rapid advancements in photonic computing highlight its vital role in future AI architectures, potentially catalyzing groundbreaking discoveries across diverse fields such as drug discovery and materials design.
