RCOG votes in favour of decriminalising abortion

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has offered its backing to the decriminalisation of abortion in the UK.

Following a vote by the RCOG council, the organisation has voted strongly in favour of supporting the removal of criminal sanctions associated with abortion, and is now recommending that the procedure be subject to regulatory and professional standards in line with other medical procedures.

The college noted that it is not calling for any change in gestational limits for abortion, and that services should continue to be regulated, but also that its updated position will allow the health service to better meet the needs of female patients.

This comes after the RCOG previously established an abortion task force to help to address ongoing issues in training, education and commissioning surrounding the procedure.

RCOG president Professor Lesley Regan said: "The adoption of this position statement is another example of the RCOG standing up for the rights of women and girls on the issue of abortion."

The British Medical Association recommended that abortion no longer be legally classified as a crime in the UK earlier this year.
