REGN3500 phase II trial posts mixed results

Sanofi and Regeneron’s REGN3500 (SAR440340) phase II trial involved 296 patients with moderate-to-severe forms of asthma that were not well controlled by inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta-agonist therapy. Results were mixed. Whilst the trial met its primary endpoint of outperforming placebo in terms of the proportion of patients who suffered loss of asthma control, patients who received Dupixent performed numerically better than those on REGN3500 across all endpoints, with a combination of Dupixent and REGN3500 yielding no better results than Dupixent alone. It was noted however that REGN3500 worked best in patients with blood eosinophil levels above 300 cells/microliter, but again, Dupixent is most effective in this group.
Steve Pascoe, Sanofi’s head of immuno-inflammation development, said: “We have ongoing studies for SAR440340 in atopic dermatitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We will evaluate the results of these studies as well as the findings in asthma to determine the best path forward for this therapy.”
