Report calls for focus on teenage health

16th July 2008

The Department of Health has announced the publication of the 2007 annual report from chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson – which has urged a new focus on teenage health.

It has reviewed key health problems for teenagers and highlighted their unique physical needs.

Sir Liam also called for a national summit to assess health programmes and services for teenagers, including their increased involvement in the design of their health services and the establishment of a young person’s panel to advise on national campaigns on risk taking.

He also suggested the reduction of the legal blood alcohol level limit for drivers aged between 17 and 20 to zero.

Sir Liam said: “Adolescence can be a challenging time. It is a period in which teenagers encounter risks and make hard choices.

“Young people are exposed to behaviours, opportunities and products that have the capacity to harm their health in the short and long term.”

He added that his report concentrates on six major factors affecting teenage life; smoking, accidents and violence, alcohol and drugs, diet, physical activity and sexual health.

In April 2008, the BBC reported that under-18s could be banned from using sunbeds if Health and Safety Executive proposals are approved.
