Researchers have developed a stretchable battery

A stretchable battery, dependable on a unique plastic to stock power more safely compared to conventional batteries, has been developed by researchers from Stanford University. The battery, which maintained a constant power output when folded, stretched and squeezed in laboratory tests, can safely power wearable devices. However, the prototype can hold only fifty per cent of the power found in a traditional battery.

A developer of the device and Chemical Engineer, Zhenan Bao, stated: “Until now, we haven’t had a power source that could stretch and bend the way our bodies do, so that we can design electronics that people can comfortably wear. One potential application for such a device would be to power stretchable sensors designed to stick to the skin to monitor heart rate and other vital signs.”
