Rutgers University has developed a blood sampling device
Researchers from New Jersey’s Rutgers University have developed a blood sampling and testing system, with an integrated ultrasound image-guided robot to extract blood from the veins of patients. The device also incorporates a centrifuge blood analyser and a module that manages samples.
The device was tested on thirty-one volunteers and either reached or surpassed clinical expectations, with an overall success rate of 87 per cent. Moreover, the success rate for those twenty-five patients whose veins were easier to attain was ninety-seven per cent. The study was published in the journal Technology.
A Biomedical Engineering Doctoral Student, Yarmush lab, Biomedical Engineering Department in the School of Engineering, Rutgers University-New Brunswick and lead author, Josh Leipheimer, stated: “A device like ours could help clinicians get blood samples quickly, safely and reliably, preventing unnecessary complications and pain in patients from multiple needle insertion attempts.”
