Sanofi and Genzyme to ally with Ablynx on multiple sclerosis research

Sanofi and Genzyme has announced a new collaboration with Ablynx on research into a promising approach for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

The companies will be investigating nanobodies against a target that plays an important role in multiple sclerosis and specifically aligns with Genzyme's early-stage research programmes involving neuroprotection and central nervous system repair.

Genzyme will have the right to perform in vitro and in vivo research with Ablynx's nanobodies in return for an exclusivity fee. Upon completion of these studies, it will also have the option to negotiate a license agreement.

With this approach, it is hoped that the underlying causes of multiple sclerosis disease progression can be tackled.

Johanne Kaplan, vice-president for neuroimmunology research at Genzyme, said: "This project supports our research that includes the exploration of novel therapeutic platforms to address unmet needs in multiple sclerosis."

Multiple sclerosis is a key research priority for Sanofi and Genzyme, which are responsible for the development of the successful therapy Lemtrada.
