Sanofi-Aventis discusses BiPar Sciences take over

15th April 2009

Sanofi-Aventis has made steps to reinforce its oncology research and development portfolio, it has asserted.

Christopher A Viehbacher, chief executive officer of the firm, made this comment after it was announced the Paris-listed company had signed a binding agreement for the takeover of privately-held BiPar Sciences.

One of the leaders in the DeoxyriboNucleic Acid field, the biopharmaceutical business uses Poly ADP-Ribose Polymerase inhibitors to target and kill cancer cells.

The merger with BiPar shows Sanofi-Aventis’ attempts to reach its goal of looking at new approaches to strengthen its pipeline, explained Mr Viehbacher.

He commented: “This acquisition illustrates our strong commitment to oncology to provide patients, physicians and public health stakeholders with breakthrough medicines addressing unmet medical needs.”

Subject to the acceptance of the Federal Trade Commission, the closing of the transaction is expected to be completed in the second quarter of the year.

Last week, Sanofi-Aventis declared it had signed another agreement to take over Medley, the third largest pharmaceutical company in Brazil.

Heraldo Marchezini, from the former, stated the acquisition showed the company’s dedication to providing people in the south American country with medicines.
