Sanofi reports positive data from Lyxumia diabetes trial

Sanofi has announced positive clinical trial data for Lyxumia that demonstrates the drug's efficacy in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Results from the GetGoal Duo 1 and GetGoal-L studies have illustrated that the compound is able to significantly reduce blood sugar levels when used in combination with basal insulin plus oral anti-diabetic agents.

It delivered benefits to patients with type 2 diabetes who were either new to insulin therapy or already treated with insulin, while the primary efficacy endpoints of both studies were successfully met.

Lyxumia, also known as lixisenatide, is currently under review by the European Medicines Agency, which acknowledged receipt of Sanofi's marketing authorisation application in November 2011.

Dr Matthew Riddle, professor of medicine at the division of endocrinology, diabetes and clinical nutrition at Oregon Health and Science University, said: "These results with lixisenatide are encouraging and provide scientific support as a potential approach for these patients."

This comes after the firm also recently published positive findings from a new study of Lantus, another of its type 2 diabetes therapies.
